About the departmens
The department was founded in 1972 on the basis of the Laboratory of Structural and Physical Studies of Superhard Materials. Since 1986 to 2012 Department 14 was called Department of Physicochemical Principles of Superhard Materials Production.
Main scientific directions
ÈStudies of physicochemical processes occurring in solids and melts; interaction of superhard materials with gases and liquids in the formation of monocrystalline, polycrystalline, dispersed, and film superhard materials and composites based on them in wide ranges of temperatures and pressures; investigations of structures and properties of the synthesized materials; crystallographic and nanostructural studies using modern methods and equipments; to provide the work of the general use center of NAS of Ukraine with unique analytical instrumentations.
Tasks of the Department:
- Establishment of the regularities of physicochemical interactions in the systems used for producing diamond single crystals of various dispersions, diamond-based and cBN-based polycrystalline composites, ceramic and film materials;
- development of the high-pressures production of novel diamond polycrystalline composite materials for effective applications in working elements of tools operating under extremely complicated conditions, e.g., drilling hard rocks and cutting;
- development of new processes of the formation of morphology and surface compositions of dispersed superhard materials and components for production of polycrystalline composite materials;
- establishing the regularities of wetting in the systems used to produce single crystals of diamond and cubic boron nitride, polycrystalline and composite materials based on them, ceramic and film materials;
- establishing the regularities of the formations of structure, phase composition, optical properties of single crystals of superhard compounds, polycrystalline and composite materials on their bases;
- development of computer-aided analytical methods to diagnose operating characteristics of superhard materials powders and assessment of their quality;
- studies of the production of novel superhard materials, structured by phases of nondiamond carbon using a physicochemical synthesis at pressures lower than atmospheric.
