Innovative investment development (2001-2010)
The entering into the ХХ І century was connected everywhere with bigger, than in the end of each century, expectations. Let's remind of them, without leaving the main direction of our narration, problems of material science. Let's mark the main: the key factor of development of tool material science in the XX century was technical progress of a mechanical engineering in a broad sense. In the beginning of the century it was a necessity in maintenance by the necessary tool kit of motor industry, production of internal combustion engine, later - steam, and then gas turbines, especially for aircraft. The leap was made by defensive technique. And in second half of the XX century the main push to the material science were given with necessity to supply with the necessary design and functional materials nuclear engineering, rocket production and space technology, electrical engineering and especially electronics engineering. It is known, that needs of company, productions move the science forward more intensive, than university educational development.

We can now regretfully speak about losses, which has experienced in 90-th the V.N. Bakul ISM by. Are lost publicity of achievements, obviousness of activity in Ukraine. However if to be discharged from narrow-minded criterions, will appear, that the potential of scientific activity is saved, there is an eligibility, perceptiveness of scientific subjects, timeliness happening.
It is complicated to live in epoch of changes, to see a direction, to follow a vector of perspective scientific development, global and all-European, to not lose a kind of need of industrial maintenance and perspective development of Ukraine. The essential condition of the future good results is that attention, which in institute since the 70-th was given to education of scientific and manufacturing high qualified competent personnel, thoughtful preparation for a defense of candidate and doctoral thesises, teaching on world scientific experience of the employees specializing in perspective fields of knowledge.
In institute there was an expressed eligibility of a management in solution of problems connected to further development and perfecting of research-and-production activity of created by V.N. Bakul and N.V. Novikov scientific school, created with education of competent scientific personnel, with development of new marks of powders, pastes and kinds of production of synthetic and natural diamonds, cubic boron nitride , composite materials and tool production, high technologies of materials production and machining process.

Now in the world there are two scientific centers, where the scientific basis of forming of mesostructures in composite materials, - Institute for superhard materials and University of Alabama in Birmingham (University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA) are developed. Scientific tweening centers for the ISM are: Center of high pressure "Unipress" in Warsaw, University in Poitier, France, Photon Institute in Yen, Germany, Center of material science in Tsukuba, Japan, University in Krakow, Poland, University of Beijing, China.
Under the prognosis’s of the leading scientists, in ХХІ century the revolutionary modifications in all lines of business of mankind will be caused by application of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies. Development of nanoindustry conditionally divides into two stages: creation of nanopowders and creation of nanostructural materials. Today the first stage is successfully developing.
The subjects of the ISM, connected with work on creation of new materials, calls significant interest in international scientific community. On this scientific direction are executed and are preparing for discovery number of research projects involving employees of the institute under the European frame programs of other international research funds.
