Chapter 9


The presence of a scientific school requires the confirmation of the existence of a certain system of the transfer of knowledge from a generation to a generation of scientists in a research institute. The older generation transmits to the youth the accumulated knowledge, skills and experience in the organization of scientific work.

As it was already mentioned, in the 1950s V.N. Bakul prepared the instruction for a worker of how to operate new drills, so that they worked for a long time effectively and profitably. At that time it did not come into mind to anybody to hide the knowledge from the inexperienced young workers. Without this the common business would not move. At present under the conditions of a rigid competition of manufacturers experience and the knowledge are not widely distributed, they are protected by patents, and the intellectual property is considered as goods.
But in scientific schools in their development and formation the case is as before. A broad access to mastering the valuable experience from the teachers to disciples is open.
Pedagogical activity, individual work with the students, lectures and seminars with the post-graduate students, meeting with those, who work for a Doctor’s degree, applicants for scientific degrees is the constant sacred duty, vocation of the heads of scientific schools. In addition to their own work, they, certainly have some disciples. Therefore, many ISM scientists, which are now leading in the field, thank to their teachers.
Over 50 years of the ISM activity the training of youth was an integral part of V.N. Bakul’s and N.V. Novikov’s works, and it began with a student's bench or from the moment the graduates of high schools and technical schools were taken to work at the Institute, pilot plant, or Special Design and Technological Bureau.
Over the course of the existence of the Institute the training was necessary and never was interrupted, though the forms of training and system of its structure varied.

It is obvious that each academic research institute, which exists for many years, forms its own characteristic profile and special style, which are defined by three factors: a direction of scientific activity, resource-and-technical conditions of the period and, certainly, the staff. The people, their joint activity as a collective of experts, researchers, various in age, experience, who came with different knowledge from high schools, with their own mentality form in due course a uniform creative team, which forms the basis for the creation of a certain scientific school. To belong to one or another scientific school means to believe, that your work, your responsibilities is your personal responsibility for a concrete sector of activity, before the whole large SCIENCE.
To reflect in full measure the experience of institute, it is necessary to underline, that for 50 years its activity was headed only by two persons, scientists, teachers, organizers of work in the diamond synthesis. If the first, V.N. Bakul, has created, if it is possible to say so, the industrial-scientific basis, the second head, N.V. Novikov, developed the academic scientific school, saving and increasing experience of industrial implementation of the scientific results in the shortest possible time.
This is a very important moment for the understanding what has taken place with the coming of a new director in a 1977. By saving all production, disciplinary, and social traditions introduced by V.N. Bakul, he has managed to improve the style and methods of the work of the collective. Independent creative principles of the research orientation have essentially grown. To go further, it was necessary to meet more and more challenges, and it was necessary for the institute collective to deepen research work, to involve methodical modern achievements in physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and mechanics of solids, to use the theoretical basis, to advance modern experimental engineering. The result of this became not only achievements of a fundamental character, but also essential industrial outcomes. In the advances of the industry, in achievements of nuclear engineering and astronautics our country has done without an import of diamond materials and tools.

The Institute was included in a circle of a world science, has taken part in many international scientific conferences, has established global scientific connections with leading science centres of European, Asian, and American countries. Tens members of the ISM defended their doctor and candidate of sciences dissertations.
The Bakul–Novikov school formed at the Institute is the basis of the created centre of technical and technological superiority at the world level in materials science of diamond and diamond-like superhard materials having tool and construction applications, contributes to the authority of Ukraine in the world. The achievements of the ISM team in fundamental research contributed to the technological advances in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, optics, electronics, technical fundamentals of medicine, geological prospecting, stone-working, coal-, oil-, and gas-extraction.
The practical use of synthetic diamonds, hard alloys, a wide spectrum of superhard materials, developed by the scientists, has defined the progress in a solution of important problems of production starting from a middle XX century in many industries, and also social progress, as a result of increasing potentialities of electronics, informatics, public transport, etc.
The experience of the Bakul–Novikov school was used not only in the USSR up to the 1990, but also abroad, particularly, in Japan and China.
At the 50th anniversary of the Institute for Superhard Materials it is important of note that though today the science and technology require collective effort to have the efficient results, nevertheless, the role of individual persons remains important. The Institute and its members have been lucky that for five decades their leaders have been only two persons – V.N. Bakul (for 16 years) and N.V. Novikov (for the subsequent years). Their scientific school is aimed at training just the leaders of the high world scientific level in scientific search, technological developments, and technical progress.
The long-term experience of the Institute scientific school generated by V.N. Bakul and N.V. Novikov indicates that the accumulation of scientific results, successful technical and technological realization of them due to the intensive concentration of creative energy and coordinated activities of experts in the course of the search, development, technological realization of scientific and technical achievements not only generates scientific products, ideas, but also ensures the reproduction of the subsequent generations of researchers.
